Online or instore for music purchasing?
Do you buy your music in a shop online or a shop in the high street? If you said ‘online’ then you are in very good company. Many people are now choosing an online shopping experience rather than traipsing around the shops. Are the future holds more of this: a study by Forrester Research Inc. has shown that by 2011, half of all music bought in the US will be music downloads; by 2012, music downloads will surpass CD sales. That’s amazing whichever way you look at it – especially when you consider the relative youth of this emerging market.
The popularity of filesharing – through programs like Limewire and Ares – has also grown. While the numbers of MP3 downloads from these sources are obviously not documented it’s safe to say that they dwarf the ‘official’ figures by quite some way.
The music industry is changing and if businesses are to make money they must change with it.
