Legal highs are all the rage among kids in the US these days. While parents are no doubt overjoyed that less children are turning to hard drugs, the latest fad sweeping through the schools of America involves children taking these legal highs, also marketed as herbal highs.
These legal highs come in a range of forms, most common in pill form. They are a legal alternative to hard drugs, such as ecstasy or amphetamines. The effects of these legal highs varies from raising a person’s heart beat through to making them experience intense trips.
Magic mushrooms can be taken to make a user experience anything from mild to wild hallucinations, but another substance on the market can produce much more intense effects. Salvia divinorum can be bought in smoking stores or else over the Internet and is perfectly legal to buy. The effects of salvia can last for a long time and range from making a user hallucinate to triggering out-of-body experiences.
Most school children, however, aren’t all that keen on salvia. Rather than salvia, they turn to things such as herbal ecstasy, which is said to give users a bit of buzz, although most of the time the kids might end up with nothing more than a headache and a craving for water.
Perhaps more worrying for parents in the US was the news that four kids in Pennsylvania were taken to hospital after taking the legal high Snurf pills. Parents have been on the rampage ever since, trying to get Snurf pills off the market, but with the ease of availability, it’s looking like a lost cause.
Experts were called in to examine the Snurf pills. The experts were left stumped as to everything in the pills, but speculated that, judging from the effects users experience, Snurf pills might contain dextromethorphan (DMX), the cough suppressant ingredient found in many medicines.
