Free music downloads a growing phenomenon
Free music downloads is a growing phenomenon. As many top-name acts, producers and publishers (among which, unbelievably, lie Sony BMG) begin to realise how important it is to embrace rather than fend off free music downloads, the more interesting moves we are beginning to see in the markets.
Nine Inch Nails – US based rock act – have continued the trend and are offering their latest album for free from their website. Free music downloads isn’t something that is new to Nine Inch Nailsindeed band leader Trent Reznor has long been a proponent – as singles from their 2007 album Year Zero. A few months ago Trent and the gang offered more free music downloads to fans who could download sections of “Ghosts I-IV”, an instrumental album released with a Creative Commons license, allowing fans to remix or share the music for non-commercial purposes.
Ghosts I-IV represents free music downloads, but free as in speech, not as in beer. Still it is an interesting move in what is becoming quite a dynamic industry. Long live free music downloads!
