Benchmarking futurehosting Virtual Private Server (VPS)

A few days ago there was an important soccer game, atleast for Romanians. The game wasn’t featured on TV, no television network had the right to broadcast it, legal issues, bla bla bla.

The game was on live radio though but the sites broadcasting the sound stream had a hard time copping with the high demand …so I decided to keep a shoutcast mirror on my $10 futurehosting VPS.

I remembered that the TCP limit on the VPS was 250 so I set the shoutcast max listeners to 225. I reached the max listeners very quick and held it for the entire 90+ minutes at 32kbps. Oh well, here are the stats and proof:

The VPS has 128MB ram and is unmanaged, still one of the cheapest VPS plans out there. The tech support is outstanding anyway, fast reply and they seem to care about each and evey customer.

However page rank cannot be tested as well as the other stuff.

It’s not a crap server, it’s an entry lvl VPS …and does it’s job for the money … :)
You can get a bigger package with more ram and stuff if you need it :)

I’ve been looking for a cheap VPS to host my site. This sound cheap enough that i could give a try for a month or two.

How long have you been with them? Support quality? Support turnaround? Transfer speeds?

I’ve been with them for a month, but like I said, support is one of their strong part and didn’t really needed until I canceled. I canceled because I just wanted to test the service but I’ll be back soon on their biggest unmanaged plan.
About the transfer …as you could see …you can do close to 1MB/s (4kb x 225) easy but if you got something using less resources you can do about 4MB/s.
I don’t know how this would help you as php and mysql applications usually eat more resources that this VPS has when you have lots of visitors at the same time but it also depends on the way you tweak your apache / php / mysql.
I think you can also request a 7day free trial …
Just tell me how it goes :)

To bad its only VPS, if it was dedicated free trial ild sign up for a tonne of them and run game servers :)

Don’t you think their prices are a bit high? I mean I’m sure i have seen the same prices else ware that are managed and most of these are not managed.

I don’t think so as they are very low priced …but I can’t actually look up all offers on the Internet, cat I?
Anyway, I think that maybe the managed ones at this price had lower specs.

True, i normally miss the specs and go straight for RAM, price and storage + banwidth. :)
